March 20—March 26 is Adult Learners’ Week all across Quebec!
An estimated one million Quebecers – that’s one in five people – are unable to read this text (Level 1). An additional 1.7 million Quebecers are at Level 2 and do not have adequate literacy skills to learn how to learn on their own. 49% of adult Quebecers (aged 16— 65) fall below what we would consider the ‘average’ (Level 3) reading level.
Good reading skills are linked with everything from economic independence; to better health; to job security; to lower risks of accidents in the home and in the workplace. Statistics demonstrate that the rate of diabetes goes up—significantly—as literacy levels go down. People with low literacy skills are less likely to volunteer; less likely to be active in their community and more likely to die at an earlier age. A study by the Archives of Internal Medicine indicates that low health literacy is the top predictor of mortality after smoking.
